Example 3: Negative Emotions & Toxins

A post by a medical doctor making unfounded claims and selling a product

This post was created by a medical doctor who practices functional medicine. It makes the claim that our body "holds suppressed trauma & emotions" in the lymphatic system, which damages that tissue and makes it susceptible to environmental toxins and other pathogens. At the end of the post, she plugs her subscription-based app to help people navigate the problem that she's described.

What works well here?

For people concerned with the impacts of environmental toxins on human health, this post has eye-catching imagery. It pairs a woman with the pollution-spewing industry she is theoretically traumatized by. The woman is seeking solace in the arms of a strong, attractive man. Both the comment text and image portray a situation to fear and solution to that fear. From a marketing perspective, a motivating problem is established and a comforting solution is offered.

What doesn't works well?

What doesn't work well is big. This post is based in the presentation of a problem to fear–that our bodies are a sewer system of inescapable environmental toxins that are killing us and at the root of the trauma we can't seem to heal from. The problem is that there's no evidence to support any of these claims. The author doesn't even attempt to provide citations. Still, a person may be swayed by a post like this out of emotion.

As a medical doctor, the author of this post is violating a number of ethical codes, including the pedaling of false information and doing so for financial gain.
